Laughter in Philosophy

In this book, laughter is not simply a reaction of pleasure but a human mechanism quietly at work: it brings the rigid back into line, lets the vain give themselves away, suddenly strips authority of its dignity, and makes terror loosen its grip a little. Laughter is sometimes discipline, sometimes a counterattack, and sometimes a way out that people leave themselves.

Laughter in Philosophy is a small book of ideas written for an age of comedy. Starting from what thinkers including Bergson, Kant, Baudelaire, Hegel, Adam Smith, Wittgenstein, Aristotle, Hobbes, Schopenhauer, Freud, Bakhtin and Cicero have said, the author, Huang Jingou, takes up three questions, what laughter is, where it comes from and how to use it, to rethink how laughter, humour, the comic and comedy relate to the human condition.
