Edogawa Rampo Mystery Collection

The work of Edogawa Rampo, "the father of Japanese detective fiction", is often described as "mystery in the broad sense, tinged with the bizarre", and it laid the foundations for Japanese mystery and horror writing. "The best method of detection," Rampo said, "is to see through what lies hidden deep in a person's heart." His stories are dark and eerie enough to make the skin crawl, leading readers straight into the secret corners of the mind and lifting the veil on the dark side of human nature.

The Edogawa Rampo Mystery Collection comes in six volumes, translated by Cao Yibing, Zhao Ying, Lü Lingzhi and Wen Xueliang. Beast in the Shadows, The Case of the Murder on D. Hill, The Human Chair and The Stalker in the Attic each collect eight or nine works, led by the title story; The Demon of the Lonely Island is Rampo's first full-length novel; and The Black Lizard, one of his best-known novels, tells of the battle of wits between the legendary thief "Black Lizard" and the detective Akechi Kogoro.
