Dress Code

Dress Code

Fashion has never been just a game of style; it is a battlefield of power. Nothing about what we wear is trivial: through dress, the young stand up to authority, women affront the world, and we define our own image. Schools use dress codes to divide "good girls" from "bad girls" and workplaces use them to reinforce stereotypes; every time we get dressed, we have already encoded and decoded a social identity.

A fashion insider, Véronique Hyland, fashion features director of ELLE (US edition), looks back on the whole industry as a "traitor", questioning the limits of the freedom to dress and reconsidering why fashion exists at all. With feminism as her scalpel and consumer society as the dissecting table, she shows the flesh and sinew beneath the glossy surface of the fashion industry. Translated into Chinese by Ren Ruijie.
